Tikkun Olam

The snow has melted, flowers are blooming, and the end of the school year is upon us.  I know that everyone is looking forward to softball.  Spring also means it is budget time on the CBE Board, and this year, I am an “at large” member of CBE’s board and a member of the finance committee.  I am also the chair of CBE’s Social Action Committee.  Yes, there is a Social Action Committee.  There are currently a few annual activities coordinated by the committee every year:  High Holiday Food Drive for the Weinberg Food Pantry of Jewish Family Services, Packing Thanksgiving food boxes at Jeffco Action Center, Toy Drive over the holidays and cooking soup for the EChO clients 2-3x per year.   Additionally, CBE is an active member of the Evergreen Shelter Program (ESP), permitting use of our facility.  The Social Action Committee is always looking for Tikkun Olam opportunities that can be shared with CBE members.   Many folks have contacted me in my capacity of Social Action Chair to ask about what activities CBE performs/coordinates to support the community.  And I have been thinking about how to share expanded opportunities.

One of the wonderful characteristics of our congregation is the high level of individual commitment to Tikkun Olam.  Many of our congregants are active in favored charitable organizations, some hold board positions and/or perform committee work.  Over the past year, I have been thinking about how to best incorporate support for these preferred organizations into CBE’s Tikkun Olam activities.  To do this, we need to start at the beginning.  I would like to compile a list of organizations that are actively supported and/or favored by CBE congregants and their families.   This list of organizations and activities could then be shared in various ways – with the religious school as a starter for Mitzvah Projects, with members (existing, new, perspective) to show how broadly our membership support the community, to direct people to community resources.  This is just a few ways to share the information on your favorite charitable organization.   I’m sure once we have the list, we will find other uses.

To create this reference, I would like to ask for your support to provide me with information about your favorite charitable organization.  If you could just drop an email to me at SocialAction@bethevergreen.org with the following information:

  • Name of the Organization
  • 1-2 sentence summary of what they do. (Their mission statement is probably available on their website)
  • Link to their Website
  • If desired, information on 1 major activity, other than their annual gala fundraiser, that could use some support from CBE’s congregation

The overall goal is to have a list of favored organizations to share among the CBE congregation, as needed or required.  The reference document compiled from this information will reside in the CBE office.  Your name and affiliation will not be included in the reference document – unless you wish to be listed as a contact for the organization.  Any reference document will need to be updated periodically, so I would expect to send out a request for refreshed information annually.

I know that everyone is busy with commitments, including commitments to your favorite organization.  But if you could just take 5 minutes to share with me information about said organization, as a congregation, we just might be able to provide a bit more active support to your cause.
