Wow, I never expected to write an article about food with that headline, but here we are. I have learned a lot about taste preferences of Americans during my quick and infrequent outings to the grocery store lately. If preventing COVID19 doesn’t raise our blood pressure, consumption of all that canned soup certainly will! Fear not, there are ways to continue to prepare fresh, healthy meals without having to resort to packaged foods that tend to be high in sodium and preservatives. With all that time on your hands, check out some free apps that offer ideas on ways to use items you already have in your fridge and pantry.
Recipe Apps for Ingredients on Hand
- SuperCook: This app allows you to select the ingredients you have on hand by selecting colorful icons to generate recipes. It also has a voice activation feature that allows you to speak your ingredients.
- Tasty: This app allows you to search for easy recipes that contain very few ingredients (3 to 5). You can also use the search box to type multiple ingredients you have on hand, refine (filter) the search for type of meal, diet, difficulty, cuisine, etc and it will pop up plenty of recipe suggestions. It also has videos to go along with the recipes.
- MyFridgeFood: This app is super easy to use. Just click on the ingredients you have on hand and search for recipes that include those ingredients. The recipes will tell you how many ingredients are missing from that recipe, allowing you to choose a recipe that has most of your ingredients. The more ingredients you enter, the more recipes it will generate with fewer missing ingredients.
- Epicurious: This app has great recipes to choose from that you can filter based on meal type, ingredient, health concerns, cuisine and more.
I plan to share different food related ideas in the weekly newsletter in hopes that food will continue to provide joy, comfort and most importantly, nourishment.
